Kissimmee, FL — A semi-trailer driver was killed early Wednesday when his rig collided with the back of another tractor-trailer and caught fire on Florida’s Turnpike in Osceola County, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported.
The fatal three-vehicle crash occurred around 3:15 a.m. in the southbound lanes at mile marker 248, south of Osceola Parkway near Kissimmee.
Sequence of Events
According to FHP, the driver of a semi with a double trailer failed to notice traffic slowing ahead. His vehicle struck the rear of another tractor-trailer, causing a chain-reaction collision with a third rig. According to the reports, the semi that failed to slow caught fire, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the driver’s identity.
The driver of the first rig struck from behind, a 38-year-old Orlando man, suffered serious injuries and was transported to HCA Florida Osceola Hospital. The third driver, a 55-year-old Hollywood man, was uninjured and remained at the scene.
Traffic Impact and Road Damage

Traffic in the area was closed for several hours following the crash. While most lanes have reopened, one southbound lane remains closed due to emergency road repairs, according to Florida 511.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) reported that the intense heat from the crash damaged the roadway surface. Crews are performing necessary repairs to restore the roadway to safe driving conditions, with work expected to continue into Wednesday evening.
