Philadelphia, PA — Rescue crews from multiple agencies are searching for a 25-year-old woman who reportedly jumped from the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge into the Delaware River on Saturday evening, according to officials.
The incident was reported around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, prompting an immediate response from both New Jersey and Pennsylvania authorities. The bridge, which connects Burlington County, New Jersey, to Philadelphia, was temporarily closed as crews began rescue operations.
Coast Guard Leads Search Efforts
Officials said a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Philadelphia and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City were deployed to assist in the search. Crews scanned the river late into the night and resumed operations at first light Sunday morning, Coast Guard representatives confirmed.
“Our teams searched into the night Saturday and continued at first light Sunday,” the Coast Guard said in an update.
According to NJ.com, several agencies have joined the mission, including:
- Palmyra Fire Department Marine Unit
- Philadelphia Police Department Marine Unit
- New Jersey State Police
- Burlington County Bridge Commission Police Department, which is leading the investigation
Search Conditions and Response Coordination
The Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, a vital connection across the Delaware River, has strong currents that complicate recovery operations. Search teams have been coordinating from both riverbanks, using boats, sonar, and aerial support to cover a wide area.
Officials said weather conditions were mild but visibility limited during Saturday night’s search, leading to pauses before efforts resumed early Sunday.
“Our priority is to locate the missing individual as quickly and safely as possible,” one Coast Guard officer said during a press briefing.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not released the woman’s identity, and it remains unclear what led her to jump from the bridge. The Burlington County Bridge Commission Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation and working closely with regional agencies.
Traffic across the bridge has since resumed, though drivers are being advised to use caution and expect occasional delays as search operations continue.
The Coast Guard has urged boaters in the area to remain alert and report any sightings that could assist in locating the woman.
“If anyone on the river observes anything unusual, please contact Coast Guard Station Philadelphia or local authorities immediately,” officials said.
Community Reaction
The incident has drawn emotional reactions from residents on both sides of the river, many of whom gathered along the waterfront to watch the search unfold. Local groups have expressed concern about mental health awareness and suicide prevention, urging people to seek help in times of crisis.
