Newtown Action Alliance Promotes Petition to Keep Guns Out of Schools

On April 9, 2016, Team 26 will set off again from Sandy Hook, CT to ride to the Capitol in Washington, DC. They ride to honor victims of gun violence, to raise awareness of the public health crisis of gun violence, and to support common sense measures to reduce it. ‪#‎RideOn‬

A petition will be carried by #Team26 – America’s bike messengers – from Newtown, Connecticut to the Capitol, this Saturday, April 9, 2016.

Yesterday a post on the Newtown Action Alliance Facebook page urged individuals to sign a petition on Thunderclap “Congress: #GunsOut of Schools.”

It states:

“Our nation’s colleges, universities and K-12 schools should be safe havens for learning and growth, where students, faculty, staff and visitors need not worry about the threat of gun violence on their campuses.

“We call on our federal elected representatives to make it more difficult for people to carry concealed weapons on our campuses across the country. The answer to our gun violence problem is not the introduction of more weapons.

“The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses. These gun-free policies have helped to make our post-secondary education institutions some of the safest places in the country. Let’s keep concealed handguns off our nation’s campuses, except in cases where certified law enforcement officers are employed.”

The cause is part of the “Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus.”  The Newtown Action Alliance Facebook statement read “If you agree guns do not belong in schools then please sign this petition. ‪#‎GunsOut‬.”  It asks for support of #Team26’s travel from #Newtown to #DC to keep #GunsOut of schools.  #RideOn ADD YOUR NAME: http://thndr.me/hgdGyQ”

The petition is a project by Moveon.org and GunFreeKids.org and states “Concealed Handguns Do Not Belong on College Campuses and K-12 Schools” which currently has 36,677 signatures and they are aiming for 40,000.  The petition will be delivered on April 12, 2016 to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, the petition page states.

The petition refers to a shooting on on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, OR, and states:

“Nine people died and another nine were injured on Thursday, October 1st after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, OR.

“Our nation’s colleges, universities and K-12 schools should be safe havens for learning and growth, where students, faculty, staff and visitors need not worry about the threat of gun violence on their campuses.

“We call on our federal elected representatives to make it more difficult for people to carry concealed weapons on our campuses across the country. The answer to our gun violence problem is not the introduction of more weapons.”

An update on April 1, 2016 states:

“In response to the tragedy at Umpqua Community College and other places in our country, the extreme pro-gun movement continues to push their irrational and extremist agenda of promoting the carrying of loaded, concealed handguns on college campuses and K -12 schools as a solution to school shootings.

“As a result, colleges in Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, Texas and Wisconsin have now been forced in different ways to allow the carrying of firearms on their premises (i.e. campus grounds, classrooms, dormitories, or parking lots). Similarly, K-12 schools in several states are now being forced to allow staff (barely trained, non-law enforcement) to carry concealed weapons inside buildings.

“The overwhelming majority of the 4,400 colleges and universities in the United States prohibit the carrying of firearms on their campuses. These gun-free policies have helped to make our post-secondary education institutions some of the safest places in the country. Let’s keep concealed handguns off our nation’s campuses, except in cases where certified law enforcement officers are employed.

“Please sign our petition and all signatures will be hand delivered to President Obama and your members of Congress on April 12, 2016.”
