San Francisco, CA – Authorities have arrested dozens of individuals in a sweeping crackdown on illegal drug activity across several San Francisco neighborhoods, officials confirmed on Friday.
The operation, led by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), targeted ongoing drug sales and fugitive suspects in Tenderloin, South of Market (SoMa), and Mission District areas.
Major Enforcement Operation Across San Francisco
According to a press release from the SFPD, enforcement efforts were intensified last week to dismantle the city’s drug markets. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) also assigned additional officers to assist in the multi-agency crackdown.
Since October 28, officers have arrested at least 28 suspected drug dealers and seized over nine pounds of narcotics, including fentanyl, cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. In addition, 40 individuals with outstanding warrants for various crimes were taken into custody during a one-day sweep on Wednesday, police said.
Police and City Leaders Respond
“The SFPD is doubling down on our efforts to attack the drug markets in San Francisco as we continue to purge this illegal activity from our city,” said Interim Police Chief Paul Yep. “Anyone who continues to deal and use drugs in San Francisco will be held accountable.”
Chief Yep noted that members from several investigative and patrol units were reassigned to assist the Outdoor Drug Market Task Force, which focuses on street-level drug enforcement. These intensified operations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
Multi-Agency Collaboration
The city’s Drug Market Agency Coordination Center (DMACC), launched in 2023, is at the center of this operation. The multi-agency task force brings together local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to target open-air drug markets and the street conditions surrounding them.
“Since Day 1 of my administration, I said that we were going to end open-air drug markets, and we are doing that more aggressively than ever with stepped-up enforcement,” said Mayor Daniel Lurie in a statement shared via social media. “Thanks to our local law enforcement, alongside our state and federal partners, we are targeting drug dealers and getting fentanyl off the streets.”
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the FBI are also partnering with San Francisco Police in the ongoing crackdown, reflecting a unified effort to restore safety in affected neighborhoods.
Continuing Efforts to Reclaim City Streets
The Tenderloin and SoMa neighborhoods have long been the focus of San Francisco’s anti-drug campaigns due to their history of open-air drug dealing and public health concerns. Officials say these recent arrests mark significant progress but emphasize that the fight against drug trafficking in the city is far from over.
Police encouraged residents to report suspicious activity and to support ongoing community efforts to reclaim public spaces from criminal operations.
