Caldwell County, NC – Two men are facing serious drug trafficking charges after a routine traffic stop on Christmas Eve in Caldwell County led deputies to uncover a large quantity of suspected methamphetamine, according to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the arrests highlight law enforcement’s continued efforts to protect the community—even during the holidays.
Routine Traffic Stop Turns into Drug Investigation
Deputies were patrolling Connelly Springs Road on Dec. 24 when they pulled over a vehicle for a routine traffic violation, officials said. During the stop, deputies conducted an investigation that quickly escalated after they discovered 7.3 grams of suspected methamphetamine inside the vehicle, along with digital scales, which are commonly associated with drug distribution.
Based on those findings, deputies continued their search and investigation at the scene.
Larger Quantity of Meth Found Near Suspect
Following the initial discovery, deputies located an additional 112.1 grams of suspected methamphetamine in close proximity to one of the suspects, authorities said. Investigators estimate the total amount of methamphetamine seized during the stop has a street value exceeding $17,000.
The significant quantity of drugs led deputies to take both men into custody at the scene.
Suspects Identified and Arrested
The suspects were identified as Jonathan Loven, 50, and Rodney Gragg, 52. Both men were arrested on Christmas Eve, according to the sheriff’s office.
“Our deputies remain committed to protecting our community every day, including holidays,” said Sheriff Kevin Bean in an official news release following the arrests.
Charges Filed Against Both Men
According to authorities, Jonathan Loven faces multiple charges, including:
- Two counts of trafficking methamphetamine
- Maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances
- Contempt of court
- Outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court on a felony charge
Loven is currently being held at the Caldwell County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
Meanwhile, Rodney Gragg has also been charged with:
- Two counts of trafficking methamphetamine
- Maintaining a vehicle or dwelling for controlled substances
Gragg was issued a $500,000 secured bond, officials said.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Drug Activity
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that traffic stops remain a key tool in identifying and disrupting illegal drug activity. Officials say methamphetamine trafficking continues to pose a serious threat to public safety across the region.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional arrests could follow as the investigation continues.
