DuBois, PA – A Rockton man is being held without bail after authorities discovered a homemade explosive, narcotics, and a loaded sawed-off shotgun during a search of his DuBois apartment, officials said Wednesday. The arrest highlights the dangers law enforcement faces during routine drug investigations and the risks posed to local communities.
Arrest Follows Drug Investigation
According to the Clearfield County State Police, 30-year-old Derek McCracken was arrested early Wednesday morning during a narcotics investigation at a residence on South Highland Street. The investigation, which initially focused on drug trafficking, took a dramatic turn when officers discovered a black CO2 cannister inside one of the apartment’s bedrooms.
Homemade Explosive Device Discovered
The cannister was reportedly wrapped in black tape with a metal pipe attached and two wires protruding, prompting law enforcement to call the state police Hazardous Device and Explosives Unit. The unit determined the object to be a homemade improvised explosive device (IED).
McCracken allegedly admitted to building the device, stating that he filled the cannister with approximately two-and-a-half pounds of gunpowder. When asked about his motivation, he reportedly said he built the device “because he likes to f* around on weekends.”**
Additional Weapons Found
Once the apartment was cleared, investigators also discovered a loaded, sawed-off shotgun in the bedroom, further increasing the severity of charges against McCracken.
Charges and Court Proceedings
According to online court records, McCracken is currently jailed without bail and faces multiple felony charges, including:
- Risking catastrophe
- Possession of explosive material
- Possession of weapons of mass destruction
Authorities emphasized the serious nature of the case and the potential danger to neighbors and officers during the discovery.
Community Safety Concerns
The Clearfield County State Police stressed that the investigation underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activity in local neighborhoods. Residents are urged to stay alert and report unusual behavior, particularly when it involves explosives, illegal weapons, or drug-related activity.
Sheriff’s officials also praised the collaborative efforts between narcotics and explosives units, which allowed the device to be safely handled and the apartment secured without injury.
