Republican First Selectman Candidate Will Duff: Platform for a Better Bethel
On October 25, 2015, CT State Representative Dan Carter asked Will Duff questions about his 2015 election campaign platform, at the Republican Headquarters on Greenwood Avenue in Bethel, CT. Duff is the Republican candidate for Bethel First Selectman in the upcoming 2015 election and is running against incumbent First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker.
Will Duff’s aim is to have a transparent government in which major problems and future plans of the last 6-year administration can be addressed and handled differently, he said, which will ultimately improve the financial burden on residents and also give them a better quality of life, while preserving the character of Bethel that makes it a great place in which to live.
Duff named three main issues as the reason why a change in government is needed.
One of Duff’s promises is for a better economic development plan than exists now, one that has less residential development and more commercial use, that concentrates more on getting business into Bethel. This will not only bring Bethel residents more of the businesses that are desired in Bethel, but will also bring more customers to the businesses that are already here. He said presently we do not have a First Selectman that has brought in the required new business that we need here in Bethel. Duff said, “If we have more real economic development on the commercial side this will alleviate the tax burden that is crushing we the citizens of Bethel.”
Second, taxes are a big issue in other ways. Duff feels that the town’s failed projects have cost taxpayer dollars again and again. Project examples are the Eureka Water Tank, the Walnut Hill Bridge project “that never seemed to end,” he said, and a new bridge project on Plumtrees, that was already delayed this year and set into next year, and other road projects that “seem to take forever,” he said. All the cost overruns are another reason why citizens are paying so much more in taxes, Duff said.
Duff said he has been fighting for lower taxes for the last twenty-five years and has been an avid fiscal conservative. He said he has watched the tax rate continue to climb and his generation is not going to be able to retire in Bethel or the state of Connecticut. “The businesses are fleeing, the jobs are fleeing, yet the taxes keep on going up,” Duff said. “We have to sit down at night wondering how can we set aside some money for retirement, because we can’t, because we’re paying an enormous amount in real estate taxes in local town government.” This has been one of the reasons that has driven him to run for First Selectman, he said.
“Third, we have to restore the integrity and the feeling of confidence in the First Selectman’s office,” Duff said. “Constantly as you hear excuses as to why things are happening, the due date is missed, the bridge is taking forever, the reason why we need to spend more money on whatever it is in town government that Mr. Knickerbocker wants to spend town money on, there’s always an excuse.” Duff feels that the people of Bethel are tired of hearing excuses and they want honesty and an open and transparent government back. Duff said he wants to bring this back to Bethel.
Duff feels there is presently much mismanagement in town government. “In the last six years every town project that has come forward to the town of Bethel has ended in some fiasco, costs were overrun and delays.” He said, “The buck stops at the First Selectman’s office. It’s is job to run this town and if he’s not doing it, it’s time for change. We need to move on.”
There is much more Duff had to say, regarding wanting a smaller government, his thoughts on the upcoming Transit Oriented Development project, how his administration would differ from the present one, what he hopes to accomplish as First Selectman, how he would plan, manage and monitor town projects differently, and how he would mitigate problems in the first place. He discusses tax assessor problems, bond rating, budgets and the Board of Finance, a tax freeze, a more open forum to allow public input and interaction, informing the public and keeping residents aware of present town issues, much more.
