Reno Police Seize Over Three Pounds of Heroin, Arrest Sparks Man in Major Drug Trafficking Bust

Reno, Nevada — A months-long narcotics investigation led to a major drug bust on Halloween night, resulting in the arrest of a 23-year-old Sparks man and the seizure of more than three pounds of heroin intended for distribution across the Reno–Sparks region, authorities said.

Months-Long Operation Ends in Arrest

According to the Reno Police Department, the Regional Narcotics Unit (RNU) concluded its ongoing investigation on October 31, 2025, with the arrest of Jose Maria Ramirez-Huerta, a Sparks resident, during a traffic stop in northwest Reno.

Detectives said that during the stop, officers — assisted by the Reno Police K9 Unit — discovered approximately 1,014 grams (over two pounds) of heroin hidden inside Ramirez-Huerta’s vehicle. The discovery prompted investigators to obtain and execute a search warrant at his home in Sparks.

Search Uncovers Additional Drugs

During the subsequent search of the residence near Pyramid Way and D Street, officers uncovered an additional 294 grams of heroin and approximately 20 grams of methamphetamine, according to law enforcement.

In total, investigators seized more than three pounds of heroin, which police believe was intended for widespread distribution throughout northern Nevada. Authorities described the bust as one of the largest single heroin seizures in the region this year.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

Jose Maria Ramirez-Huerta, 23, now faces multiple felony drug charges, including:

  • Possession of a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale
  • Trafficking of a Controlled Substance

Authorities say the case remains under active investigation, with potential for additional arrests or charges related to the broader drug network.

Police Encourage Public Assistance

The Reno Police Department and Regional Narcotics Unit emphasized that public cooperation remains key to combating narcotics trafficking in northern Nevada. They are urging anyone with information related to this case or other suspected drug activity to come forward.

Residents can contact the Reno Police Department directly at 775-334-2677 or reach out anonymously through Secret Witness by calling or texting 775-322-4900.

Law Enforcement Commends Joint Effort

Authorities credited the Reno Police K9 Unit for their assistance during the arrest and the Regional Narcotics Unit for its extensive investigative work. Officials noted that partnerships between agencies have proven essential in reducing drug flow into local neighborhoods and dismantling distribution operations before they expand.

“The coordination between departments is what makes operations like this successful,” said a Reno police spokesperson. “We’re committed to holding drug traffickers accountable and keeping dangerous substances off our streets.”

Community Impact and Caution

The seizure underscores growing concern about heroin and methamphetamine trafficking in the region. Police have warned residents that drug-related crimes, including overdose incidents, have seen a rise in northern Nevada, making continued vigilance critical.
