Check out “Veggies for Vets” on Facebook, or Veggies by Vets – a group of military veterans built an edible garden in the middle of the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center campus. Be inspired, rally the troops, plant a red poppy, and head on over to the Danbury Farmers’ Market to support those who served us.
In its 6th year, the Market, overseen by the Danbury Farmers’ Market Community Collaborative with CityCenter Danbury, continues its nutrition-in-action program by joining the fight: “Better Health Through Better Food” is the Market’s motto. With generous support by a donor advised fund at Fairfield County’s Community Foundation, veterans may come to the Danbury Farmers’ Market any Friday, 11:00am to 5:00pm, through October 30th, show their vet ID at the Danbury Farmers’ Market Community Collaborative tent, and receive a gift certificate to buy fruits and vegetables (while supplies last). The Danbury Farmers’ Market, with its focus on Connecticut Grown produce, is located at Kennedy Park, Main & Elm Streets, Danbury, and will be open on Friday, July 3rd for picnic and BBQ shopping. Be sure to add grilled veggies to your holiday menu!
Among the services offered by the Danbury Farmers’ Market are:
- Accepting and matching Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) “food stamps”, up to $15 per week, by enabling SNAP recipients to use their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards;
- Matching Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers, up to $9 per week, for seniors, low income veterans, and recipients of The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC);
- Providing FMNP vouchers at the Market for seniors and veterans;
- Providing, through the Community Health Center of Danbury and the Samaritan Health Center, Fruit and Veggie Health Certificates for food-insecure community members not eligible for government assistance;
- Working with the Danbury Coalition for Healthy Kids, a collaborative enabling children to shop at the Market to provide their families with fresh produce;
- Making bus passes available through HARTransit to those who need a ride home;
- Free blood pressure checks & Nutrition, Health & Fitness information; and
- Debit and credit cards are accepted.
