Paulsboro, NJ – A Paulsboro man is facing multiple serious criminal charges after a shooting inside a residence left one person dead and another injured, according to prosecutors. Authorities say the suspect admitted to firing the gun, and the case is now moving through the criminal justice system as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Shooting Reported on Elizabeth Avenue
According to court documents, the Paulsboro Police Department responded to a 911 call early Saturday morning at a home on Elizabeth Avenue. The caller reported that an adult female had been shot in the head and that a second victim had also been shot before fleeing the residence.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the adult female victim deceased inside a bedroom of the home. The scene was secured as investigators began processing evidence and searching for additional details about what led up to the shooting.
Second Victim Identified as Minor
Authorities confirmed that the second victim is a minor who suffered a gunshot wound during the incident. The injured victim was able to leave the residence and is currently receiving medical treatment. Officials have not released additional details about the minor’s condition, citing privacy concerns.
Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation remains active as they work to fully understand the sequence of events inside the home.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Ramon Luis Acevedo, 40, of Paulsboro. Acevedo was taken into custody and charged by complaint with the following offenses:
- First-degree murder
- Second-degree aggravated assault
- Second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
Court documents state that Acevedo identified himself during the 911 call, telling authorities that he had shot both victims.
Statements Made to Investigators
According to prosecutors, Acevedo later told police that he intentionally shot the first victim. He allegedly claimed that the second shooting occurred accidentally, stating that he was startled while still holding the handgun, which then discharged and struck the second victim.
Investigators are continuing to evaluate those statements alongside physical evidence and forensic findings to determine exactly what occurred inside the home.
Potential Prison Sentences
If convicted on all charges, Acevedo faces significant prison time, including:
- 30 years to life in prison for first-degree murder
- 5 to 10 years in prison for second-degree aggravated assault
- 5 to 10 years in prison for possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose
Prosecutors emphasized the severity of the charges, noting that New Jersey law mandates strict sentencing guidelines for violent offenses involving firearms.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation is being handled jointly by the Paulsboro Police Department and the Major Crimes Unit. Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns thanked both agencies for their cooperation and swift response in the case.
Authorities say additional information may be released as the investigation progresses and the case moves toward future court proceedings.
Presumption of Innocence
Officials stressed that the charges filed against Ramon Luis Acevedo are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Court dates are expected to be scheduled in the coming days.
