Pregnant Woman Overdosed on Fentanyl in Anderson; Two Arrested afte Victim's Boyfriend Told Police about Suppliers

Anderson, IN – Two Anderson men are facing multiple felony charges after allegedly supplying fentanyl that resulted in the tragic death of a pregnant woman. The incident has shocked the local community and highlights the ongoing dangers of illicit drug distribution.

Fatal Overdose Incident

The investigation began on October 7 when officers with the Anderson Police Department responded to a reported overdose at a residence in the 1400 block of Ohio Avenue. The victim, a woman in her fifth month of pregnancy, was found unresponsive and “blue,” according to the initial 911 call.

Emergency personnel attempted to revive her, including the administration of Narcan, but the efforts were unsuccessful. The woman was transported to St. Vincent Hospital, where an emergency C-section was performed in a desperate attempt to save the infant. Sadly, both the mother and child were pronounced deceased shortly afterward.

Investigation and Evidence

Court documents, as reported, reveal that a search warrant was executed at the residence following the fatal overdose. Authorities discovered:

  • A glass jar containing a white powdery substance
  • A clear bag with white rock-like substance
  • Multiple pills

Laboratory testing confirmed these substances were fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid often linked to overdose deaths.

Officers learned from the victim’s boyfriend that the woman had purchased fentanyl from Corey Lee Smith, 34, and Kanyun Orbik, 28 on October 6, the day before the fatal overdose. Further surveillance revealed multiple individuals entering and exiting the home within a short period, providing probable cause of ongoing drug activity.

Criminal Charges

Both Smith and Orbik face preliminary charges including:

  • Dealing in Methamphetamine (Level 2 Felony)
  • Dealing in a Narcotic Drug – Fentanyl (Level 2 Felony)

The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office will determine whether the men will face an additional charge of dealing resulting in death, which carries a Level 1 felony classification.

The two men are currently incarcerated at the Madison County Jail on a $500,000 full cash bond. Authorities stress that the investigation is ongoing as they gather additional evidence related to the sale and distribution of fentanyl.

Community Impact and Safety Reminder

This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illicit drugs, particularly fentanyl, which is highly potent and often lethal even in small amounts. Law enforcement encourages the community to:

  • Avoid purchasing or using illicit drugs
  • Report suspected drug activity to authorities immediately
  • Be aware of the risks of overdose and seek help for anyone showing signs of opioid use or distress

“The loss of both a mother and her unborn child is a tragedy no family should endure,” said local officials. “We urge residents to stay vigilant and help prevent similar incidents by reporting suspicious activity.”
