Police 16-Year-Old Leads Multi-City Pursuit in Stolen SUV Before Crashing in Oakland

Oakland, CA — A 16-year-old driver was taken into custody early Thursday morning after leading multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen SUV that began in San Bruno and ended in Oakland, according to the San Bruno Police Department.

Police Attempted to Stop ‘Suspicious’ Vehicle

The incident began when officers noticed a suspicious SUV near El Camino Real and Euclid Avenue in San Bruno. When police attempted a traffic stop, the teen driver refused to pull over and sped away, initiating a pursuit through Daly City and neighboring areas.

During the chase, officers from San Bruno Police and Daly City Police deployed a GPS tracking device onto the suspect’s vehicle. This allowed law enforcement to track the SUV remotely while reducing risk to the public.

Pursuit Crosses the Bay Into Oakland

Using real-time GPS data, authorities followed the vehicle as it crossed the Bay Bridge into Oakland. Meanwhile, spike strips were successfully deployed, deflating the SUV’s tires.

According to police, the driver crashed the vehicle after losing control due to the flat tires. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) assisted in locating the SUV and apprehending the suspect shortly after the crash.

Vehicle Confirmed Stolen

Following the arrest, investigators confirmed to CBS News that the SUV was stolen and that the license plates attached to it did not belong to the vehicle.

The 16-year-old suspect, identified only as a male from Oakland, was taken into custody without further incident. He has been booked at the Hillcrest Juvenile Detention Facility in San Mateo County.

Police Praise Coordination and Technology

In a public statement, San Bruno Police commended the inter-agency cooperation and use of technology that led to the teen’s arrest:

“This case is a great reminder that technology, teamwork, and training make a powerful combo,” the department said.

Authorities continue to investigate whether the suspect may be linked to other auto thefts or vehicle burglaries in the Bay Area.

Ongoing Investigation

The case remains under active investigation by the San Bruno Police Department, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol and Oakland Police Department. Charges related to auto theft, reckless evasion, and possession of stolen property are expected to follow.
