PHOTOS: Fifteen Reasons Why Bethel Needs a New Police Station
If you have not taken the tour of the Bethel Police Station yet I suggest you do so, it is an eye-opener. Once you see the deplorable conditions our police force has to work under you will have no doubt to vote anything other than “YES” for approval of a new Bethel Police Station in the upcoming referendum vote on December 17, 2015. YES, Bethel should have a new police station on Judd Avenue.
Here are just some of the problems Bethel Advocate observed in the Bethel Police Station on the tour, tours which were done in January 2015 and again this month:
ONE:
The narrow lobby area where everyone enters is so tiny no one has any privacy, you can hear every word anyone is saying to each other and police officers. This is unacceptable and is a security risk too. (View photos of lobby below.) 
TWO:
The dispatch center is far too small and inadequate, two tiny desks with six computer screens on each. (Photo below shows crowded dispatch station.) 
THREE:
The present police headquarters is like a maze with too-narrow hallways to walk a victim and officer down at the same time while others try to pass from the opposite direction. (Photos below show that two people can hardly fit the hallway widths.) 
FOUR:
Small square footage and narrow poorly-lit hallways also make it difficult to keep victims from having to pass by their perpetrator or other criminals during processing. A too-small suspect processing area is hardly enough room for one person to be fingerprinted (on right) and photographed (on left) if it doubles as another office workspace and storage area too. (See photos below.) 
FIVE:
There are only three jail cells, one not in proper working order and two have double bunks. There is one open shower stall for males and females and youth. This makes it difficult to follow law and keep youth away from adult suspects, or male away from female. 
SIX:
There is an outdated surveillance system.
SEVEN:
There are tiny offices hardly large enough to accommodate a family that needs to meet with a youth officer or detective for instance, and most offices are shared by more than one officer with desks and supplies crowded in. 
EIGHT:
The main, and only, conference room used for roll calls and important meetings of all sorts, with officers or the public, and becomes crowded with only four individuals in it and doubles as the law library. It has more computer stations and desks and more storage boxes on the floor. What would happen should the entire police force of 37 individuals have to meet in that room in a crisis situation? (Photo below taken during the police tour and you can see that as Captain Pugner is showing the proposed police station layout to residents the conference room is crowded with only four people in it, and this room is supposed to be able to fit the entire police department in it if need be. The room also has other desks and computer stations in it, and more storage of boxes on the floor. The room also serves as the law library and more chairs and other equipment are crowded into the corner near the bookcases.) 
NINE:
An evidence room is stored to capacity and an adjacent office will have to now be transformed into a second evidence room for secure locked storage of evidence, Chief Finch said.
TEN:
Numerous large containers of water are lined up on the hallway floor due to, again, inadequate storage, and needed due to a problem with the drinking water. 
ELEVEN:
The main garage is where suspects enter via police vehicles, but again, more storage is in this area, in rusty lockers and open shelving, with more storage stacked on top. This is a safety hazard should a suspect get a hold of something heavy off one of the shelves to use as a weapon against an officer. 
TWELVE:
There is one tiny locker room for the entire male police force and an even smaller locker room for the female officers. Off the men’s locker room is one toilet without a door sitting next to one open shower stall whose drain backs up and overflows when it rains a lot, due to the building being located over a swamp. The day I did the tour insects were also flying out of that drain. (Photo below shows a locker room for the entire police force of male police officers, females have an even smaller locker area.)
THIRTEEN:
Police uniform jackets were hanging on the shower rod because they cannot fit a normal hanger in a locker and there is no other storage area for them. 
FOURTEEN:
There is a tiny room next to this area that has a table for 2-3 and a sink, used as the police force lunchroom. I was told that when someone uses the bathroom on the other side of the wall, an unpleasant odor comes through the sink drain and renders the lunchroom unusable. 
FIFTEEN:
Add to this overcrowding in general, no place to store equipment properly at all, even the target practice room is used for storage. There is also a possible asbestos health hazard in the building that floods somewhat during heavy rain. (Photos below show crowded storage areas, crowded shooting range area, also used for storage, and ammunition room next to it.)
