Philadelphia Forecast Upper 80s Friday, Fall Temperatures Return Saturday

Philadelphia, PA – Summer is making a brief comeback in the Philadelphia area on Friday, as temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 80s and near 90 degrees, giving residents a late-season taste of summer heat. While the record high for mid-September is 92 degrees, forecasts suggest we’ll get very close to that mark.

Hot and Humid Friday

Along with high temperatures, dewpoint levels will rise, resulting in a noticeably humid feel in the air. Residents should expect sticky conditions, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Officials advise staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

Cooler Weekend Ahead

After Friday’s summer-like warmth, a brief shot of cooler air is expected to settle over the area for the weekend:

  • Saturday: Sunny, with highs in the upper 70s and lows around 62 degrees
  • Sunday: Cloudier skies, with highs in the mid-70s and lows near 61 degrees

The weekend is forecast to remain dry, giving residents a break from the humidity and heat.

Looking Ahead: Next Week’s Weather

Early next week will bring mostly dry conditions, but Tuesday may see showers in the afternoon and evening, though forecasts remain uncertain. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local weather authorities.

Drought Concerns

The latest drought monitor, released Thursday, shows that the Delaware Valley has expanded areas categorized as “abnormally dry”. While recent rain on Wednesday provided some relief, the amount was minimal and will not significantly impact drought conditions.

Fall Equinox

Fall officially begins Monday at 2:19 p.m. Eastern time, when the sun will be directly over the equator, marking the autumnal equinox. Cooler temperatures and seasonal changes are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

Tracking the Tropics

  • Tropical Storm Gabrielle continues with sustained winds of 50 mph, moving northwest at 14 mph, about 700 miles from the northern Leeward Islands. No land is currently threatened, but Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane by Sunday.
  • Another area of interest far to the east has a 20% chance of developing into a named storm, which would be called Humberto if it forms.
