Palm Coast Man Killed in Chain-Reaction Crash after Striking Deer on State Road

Flagler County, FL – A fatal crash on State Road 100 in Flagler County has claimed the life of an 18-year-old Palm Coast man after his motorcycle struck a deer and he was subsequently hit by a car, authorities say.

Crash Occurrence

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the incident occurred on Monday night, around 9:35 p.m., near Briarwood Drive, northeast of Bunnell. According to the patrol, the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on S.R. 100 when a deer suddenly ran into his path, leading to a chain of tragic events.

Motorcycle Hits Deer

The motorcycle’s front tire struck the deer, causing the bike to slide across the right lane and off the paved shoulder into the grass. The rider lost control, and both he and the animal were thrown from the initial point of impact. The deer landed in a nearby ditch, while the motorcyclist ended up in the left travel lane, directly in the path of oncoming traffic.

Collision With Vehicle

A westbound vehicle, driven by a 54-year-old man from Bunnell and carrying three adult passengers, was approaching the area when the driver was unaware that the motorcyclist had entered the left lane.

The car’s front center and front right bumper struck the young rider, resulting in fatal injuries at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no one in the car was injured during the crash, as per ClickOrlando.

Investigation and Safety Notes

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine all contributing factors. While wildlife collisions are a known hazard in the area, authorities remind drivers and riders to remain vigilant, especially at night and in areas prone to deer activity.

This tragic incident highlights the dangers motorcyclists face when wildlife suddenly enters roadways, and the importance of both speed management and heightened awareness in rural or wooded areas.

Community Impact

Family, friends, and the local community are mourning the loss of the 18-year-old Palm Coast resident. Officials encourage residents to drive carefully and report sightings of wildlife near busy roadways to help prevent future accidents.
