Palm Beach County, Florida – A 53-year-old Florida man was arrested after allegedly following his ex-girlfriend for more than 40 miles on the highway, repeatedly cutting her off and attempting to run her off the road, authorities report.
Highway Stalking Incident
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, when the victim contacted 911 around 4:30 p.m. to report that her ex-boyfriend, Mark Ernest Hetzel, was aggressively following her on Florida’s Turnpike.
According to the probable cause arrest affidavit, the victim saw a black Toyota parked on the right shoulder near Commercial Boulevard, which later merged into traffic and flashed its high beams, seemingly trying to pull her over. She recognized the vehicle as Hetzel’s and said he attempted to run her off the roadway multiple times while cutting her off in traffic.
The victim reportedly feared for her life as she continued to drive approximately 42 miles while speaking with 911. A Florida Highway Patrol trooper eventually stopped Hetzel at mile marker 117.
Background and Threatening Messages
Authorities discovered that Hetzel and the victim had been in a relationship for about three years. His landlord told police that Hetzel waited on the highway to confront the victim after learning she was leaving her home.
Investigators also noted a text message Hetzel allegedly sent to the victim a few days prior, which stated, “You are dead.” Law enforcement determined that the combination of the text and the highway incident provided sufficient probable cause for an aggravated stalking charge.
Arrest and Court Details
Hetzel was taken to the Palm Beach County Jail and has since posted a $100,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for January 19, 2026.
Authorities emphasize that stalking and aggressive driving incidents, especially those involving prior threats, are treated with serious concern due to the high risk of injury or death.
