Carroll County, VA — A fatal multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 77 northbound in Carroll County claimed the life of one individual on Sunday morning, according to Virginia State Police. The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. near the 8-mile marker.
Vehicles Involved and Sequence of Events
Authorities reported that the crash involved several passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer. According to police, a pickup truck traveling in the left lane struck the back of a tractor-trailer before veering off into the median on the left side of the interstate.
Shortly after the pickup’s collision, a 2020 Tesla traveling in the left lane changed into the right lane and struck a second tractor-trailer. The Tesla then moved back into the left lane and collided with the tractor-trailer involved in the initial crash.
Fatality and Entrapment
Fire crews responding to the scene confirmed that the Tesla driver was entrapped in their vehicle. Emergency responders worked to free the individual, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased pending family notification, according to the reports.

Several other occupants involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals by EMS units. Fire departments on the scene included the Hillsville Fire Department, Cana Fire Department, and Carroll County Fire Rescue.
