Santa Clarita, CA – A fatal head-on crash on Sierra Highway left one person dead and another hospitalized Tuesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The collision involved a sedan and an SUV, blocking lanes and prompting emergency response.

What Happened

The two-vehicle collision occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Anthony Road. Authorities reported that one person was trapped inside a vehicle, prompting firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department to assist in rescue efforts.

“Firefighters responded to assist with rescue efforts after learning an individual was trapped inside a vehicle,” CHP officials said.

One individual was later pronounced dead at the scene, while a second person was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. CHP has not confirmed which vehicle the fatality was in or whether the trapped individual was the person who died.

Investigation Underway

CHP described the crash as a head-on collision and said the circumstances leading up to it are under investigation.

Information from stringer service KNN suggested that a sedan may have been traveling the wrong way on the canyon roadway before colliding with a Toyota RAV4 SUV, though this has not been verified by CHP.

Multiple CHP units responded to the scene, and the Los Angeles County Coroner was notified shortly after 7 p.m.

Road Closures and Traffic Impact

Sierra Highway remained closed for several hours Tuesday night as investigators worked to clear the roadway and examine evidence. Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes while authorities conducted their investigation.

CHP encourages anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact the Newhall Area office.
