Petaluma, CA — A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly driving recklessly with a toddler inside her SUV along Highway 101, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The chase, which began in Petaluma, ended dramatically on the Petaluma River Bridge, raising serious concerns over child endangerment and public safety.
Multiple 911 Calls Spark Pursuit
CHP dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a woman driving erratically along southbound Highway 101 near Petaluma. When an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the woman refused to pull over, initiating a pursuit that covered miles of freeway.
Toddler Seen Moving Freely Inside Vehicle
One of the most alarming details: a child could be seen inside the SUV, not strapped into a car seat, and moving around freely. Due to the danger posed to the child, officers maintained a safe following distance and refrained from any aggressive intervention.
OnStar System Used to Safely Disable SUV
The vehicle — a Cadillac Escalade — was equipped with OnStar technology, which allowed authorities to gradually take control of the vehicle remotely. The system reduced the SUV’s speed in small increments, eventually bringing it to a stop on the Petaluma River Bridge.
This controlled maneuver prevented a high-speed takedown and likely saved lives, officers said.
Arrest on Bridge: Woman Clung to Child
Once the vehicle came to a halt, the woman exited the SUV holding the child tightly. CHP officers were able to safely separate the two and took the woman into custody without further incident.
She was booked into the Sonoma County Jail, although her name has not yet been released. As of now, authorities have not provided a motive for her erratic behavior as reported by KTVU.
Investigation Continues, Child’s Welfare Under Review
The CHP has confirmed that child protective services have been notified, and the child’s condition and custody status are under review. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Authorities emphasize that driving with an unsecured child — especially while evading law enforcement — constitutes a serious felony offense in California.
