Los Angeles, California – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for Southern California as a “winter-like storm system” is expected to hit the region later this week. Residents are being advised to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding.
Storm Set to Arrive Monday
The NWS reports that the storm will arrive late Monday and remain over Southern California until early Wednesday. Meteorologists are forecasting widespread light to moderate rain, with locally heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
On Sunday, much of the Los Angeles area experienced gusty winds, with a Wind Advisory expiring at 10 a.m. Despite the advisory ending, KTLA meteorologist Kacey Montoya warns that breezy conditions will persist throughout the afternoon and evening.
Monday’s Weather Expected to Intensify
According to Montoya, Monday will see much stronger winds, with gusts of 45 to 50 mph expected in many areas. Desert and mountain communities may experience sustained winds overnight.
Rain is expected to begin Monday night, moving slowly across the region. Montoya estimates 4 to 8 hours of continuous light to moderate rain, which could cause hazardous conditions in several neighborhoods.
Flood Watch Issued for Burn Scar Areas
The NWS has issued a flood watch for burn scar areas in Los Angeles, effective from Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon. The storm, described as a strong Pacific system, poses a risk of flash floods, particularly in vulnerable locations.
Mayor Karen Bass said city departments are on standby to respond to emergencies. She urged residents in hillside communities to stay alert and recommended signing up for emergency notifications at NotifyLA.org.
Rainfall and Snow Projections
By Tuesday afternoon, rain is expected to become more scattered. Forecasted rainfall ranges from 0.25 inches in the Antelope Valley to 3.5 inches in the San Gabriel Mountains. Snowfall may occur between 6,000 and 7,000 feet, though the NWS warns of high uncertainty regarding snow totals.
Cooler Temperatures Follow Storm
Temperatures are expected to remain cool throughout the region while the storm passes. A period of dry and warmer weather is forecasted to begin Thursday and likely continue through the weekend.
