NWS for Friday: Rain Will Change to a Wintry Mix of Snow, Sleet and Freezing Rain, Dangerous and Icy Travel Conditions

National Weather Service: Winter Weather Advisories in effect for far NW interior areas Tonight, and then much of the remainder of the area on Friday.

Rain will change to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain late tonight into Friday afternoon before tapering off late Friday afternoon into early Friday evening. Dangerous and icy travel conditions are of primary concern for the Friday morning commute across the Interior and Friday afternoon/evening commute for much of the area. In addition, widespread minor urban and poor drainage flooding issues, particularly along the coast, are expected late tonight through Friday morning.

Flat Ice Accretion (Accretion on radial surfaces will be 40% of values below):
• Interior portions of the Lower Hud, NE NJ and SW CT-
• Most likely accretion: 0.2” to 0.3”, Reasonable Worst Case – 0.25 to 0.5”.
• Likely Onset Timing- Transition to freezing rain likely begins after 1am, and mixing w/ sleet early to mid Friday morn, ending in the late aft.
• Earliest transition – Midnight tonight.
• Impacts- Dangerous and icy travel for Friday AM and PM commutes
• NYC/NJ metro and coastal plain – (lesser amounts for SE LI)
• Most likely accretion: T to 0.10”, Reasonable Worst Case – 0.15 to 0.25”.
• Likely Onset Timing- Transition to freezing rain from NW to SE from mid Friday morn into early Friday aft, ending in the late aft to early eve. Later changeover for SE LI.
• Earliest Onset – 6-9am for NYC/NJ metro and N&W burbs and interior SE CT.
Late morning into early afternoon for rest of coast, except mid to late aft for SE LI.
• Impacts- Dangerous and icy travel for Friday PM commute, possibly Friday AM commute.
Moderate to Heavy Rainfall:
• Storm Total Rainfall – 1 1/2” to 2 1/2”, highest across Interior.
• Max Rainfall rates – 0.1 to 0.2”/hr late Tonight into Friday aft.
• Impacts: Widespread minor urban and poor drainage flooding late Tonight thru Fri for most of the area, due to snowmelt, rain, and blocked storm drains. Minor flooding possible on fast responding small rivers and streams.
