Rockport, MA — Beachgoers on the North Shore were forced out of the water Monday morning following a reported shark sighting, prompting local authorities to temporarily close Long Beach and nearby Cape Hedge Beach for safety.
Shark Fin Spotted Near Shore
According to the Rockport Police, the sighting occurred just before 11 a.m. when lifeguards and beach visitors reported seeing a fin approximately 50 feet off shore at Long Beach. In response, lifeguards immediately cleared swimmers from the water and contacted local authorities.
“During that time public safety officials will continue to monitor and make a determination on when to reopen once the initial closure window elapses,” police wrote in a social media post.
Authorities Respond With Caution
Police officers, along with the Harbormaster, responded in boats to confirm the presence of a shark and assess any immediate danger to the public. While no attack or injury has been reported, the beach will remain closed for at least two hours, in accordance with Rockport’s Shark Sighting Policy.
- Long Beach and Cape Hedge Beach are closed to all swimmers.
- Public safety officials will continue to monitor the area from boats and shoreline posts.
Safety Precautions and Monitoring
Officials emphasized that the closure is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid entering the water until authorities confirm that the beaches are safe to reopen.
Shark sightings along the North Shore are rare but taken seriously. Lifeguards and police remain vigilant during peak beach hours, particularly during the summer season when swimming activity is highest.
“The initial closure window allows officials to determine if further action is needed before reopening the beaches to the public,” said a Rockport Police spokesperson.
Authorities continue to review the area and will provide updates as soon as the beaches are deemed safe for swimming. Residents are encouraged to follow Rockport Police social media channels for the latest information.
