North Fond du Lac Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Fentanyl Overdose Death

Fond du Lac, WI — A North Fond du Lac man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the 2020 fentanyl overdose death of his sister, according to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.

Conviction and Sentencing

Christopher J. Hoerth was convicted in April 2020 of First-Degree Reckless Homicide and Felony Bail Jumping following a five-day jury trial. On Monday, Judge Tricia Walker sentenced him to six years of initial confinement and six years of extended supervision.

Prosecutors said Hoerth provided his sister with fentanyl, which led to her fatal overdose. The medical examiner determined her cause of death to be fentanyl toxicity, with 30 nanograms per milliliter found in her system.

“No parent should have to bury their child, but fentanyl continues to kill. We will continue to fight for justice for families in the hopes of deterring others from feeling its deadly impact,” District Attorney Eric Toney stated.

Additional Drug Charges

In a separate case, Hoerth pleaded no contest to drug possession charges. Both cases were investigated by the North Fond du Lac Police Department, with assistance from Fond du Lac and Grand Chute police officers as reported by WAGB.

Dangers of Drug Abuse

The case underscores the lethal dangers of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Even microscopic amounts can be deadly, making it a major driver of overdose deaths in Wisconsin and across the U.S.

Health officials emphasize:

  • Avoid illicit drugs — Many street drugs are laced with fentanyl without the user’s knowledge.
  • Carry naloxone (Narcan) — This life-saving medication can reverse opioid overdoses if used promptly.
  • Seek help for addiction — Treatment programs and counseling can reduce the risk of relapse and overdose.
  • Educate communities — Awareness of fentanyl’s dangers can prevent tragedies.

Combating the Fentanyl Crisis

Law enforcement and public health agencies in Wisconsin continue to target both drug suppliers and public education efforts. Programs that combine enforcement with prevention strategies are seen as vital to reducing overdose deaths.

The Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing maximum penalties in cases involving fentanyl-related fatalities.
