Newtown Police Arrest Man for Assault on a Police Officer, Engaging in Pursuit, Reckless Operation and Larceny / Stolen Vehicle, and More

Assault on Officer, Engaging in Pursuit, FTA, and more
On 10/7/18 Newtown officers were conducting traffic enforcement on Rt 34 when they observed a vehicle without a front registration plate, the rear plate registration was identified as belonging to a different vehicle. While attempting to stop said vehicle it engaged in pursuit with the officers. Due to safety concerns to the community the officers disengaged the pursuit. Officer James located the vehicle a short time later on a side street. Officer James confronted the driver on foot and attempted to disable the vehicle. At that time the operator accelerated away dragging Officer James almost crushing him between his patrol vehicle and the suspect vehicle.
Officer James was again able to locate the vehicle a short distance away where it was unoccupied. Newtown’s K9 did successfully track the suspects movement on foot, however it was later identified the suspects were picked up a short time later by a third vehicle. Newtown Police were able to obtain an arrest warrant with 11 charges on the suspect, John Paul Suero of Danbury for this incident. With the most serious charges being Assault on a Police Officer, Engaging in Pursuit, Reckless Operation and Larceny 1st Degree (stolen vehicle).
On 10/13/2018 Newtown Police and Danbury police orchestrated a manhunt for Suero who had four outstanding warrants for his arrest. One warrant was for the above mentioned incident. The remaining three warrants were out of Bethel and Torrington on Failure to Appear in Court on other charges.
Suero was held over the weekend on a combined $104,500 bond and transported on 10/15/18 to Danbury Superior Court for arraignment.
