New York City Braces for Up to 8 Inches of Snow This Weekend, Travel Disruptions Expected

New York City, NY – New Yorkers should prepare for up to 8 inches of snow this weekend as a fast-moving winter storm is expected to impact the city and surrounding areas, potentially disrupting holiday travel just after Christmas.

Snowfall Predictions

Meteorologists predict that New York City and the tri-state area will experience snow starting Friday afternoon, lasting through early Saturday morning.

  • New York City: Expected snowfall between 3 and 6 inches, with Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn likely on the lower side of the range.
  • Interstate 287 corridor (NJ-NY): Could see up to 8 inches of snow.
  • Long Island: Also possibly up to 8 inches.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys noted that while there will be accumulation, the snow will be fluffier than usual, making it less ideal for snowball fights or building snowmen.

Timing and Travel Hazards

The storm is forecast to begin around 3 p.m. Friday and conclude by 10 a.m. Saturday. There is also the possibility of sleet mixing with snow, especially south and west of the city, which could further complicate travel conditions.

“The likelihood of 3 to 6 inches is quite definite for the area, so travel is going to be impacted starting with the Friday evening commute into the Saturday morning hours,” Roys emphasized.

City Preparations

Acting NYC Department of Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan stated that the agency has launched operations well in advance and is ready for the storm.

Additionally, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams issued a travel advisory, urging commuters to avoid driving when possible and to allow extra time for public transit.

“As New Yorkers continue to celebrate the holidays and prepare to celebrate the New Year, they should also prepare for hazardous travel conditions Friday into Saturday,” Adams said.

Christmas Day Weather

While Christmas Day on Thursday will remain snow-free, residents should expect cold temperatures, around freezing in the morning and dropping to the upper teens at night in colder parts of the region. The day will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with breezy conditions in the afternoon.
