Newark, NJ – New Jersey residents are preparing for a powerful nor’easter storm expected to hit the state this weekend, bringing up to 5 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 50 mph, authorities said. The storm is forecasted to impact the state from Sunday into Monday.
Wind and Rain Threats
Sustained winds between 30 and 40 mph could gust as high as 50 mph along the Jersey Shore, according to the National Weather Service. These conditions may lead to widespread power outages, coastal flooding, and dangerous marine conditions, especially in southern coastal areas.
The storm is expected to produce 1–2+ inches of rain widely, with local totals possibly reaching 3–5 inches. Residents along the coast are advised to stay alert for updated forecasts and warnings.
Coastal Impacts
Officials warn of moderate to major coastal flooding, beach erosion, and hazardous winds. The National Weather Service urged those living near the shore to remain vigilant as storm details evolve.

AccuWeather describes the system as a tropical rainstorm, with a high chance it could be classified as a subtropical hybrid storm. Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva emphasized that the early classification helps raise awareness ahead of potential National Hurricane Center updates.
Storm Track and Timing
The system will develop off the Carolina coast on Saturday night and move northward, with the most severe weather expected Sunday and Monday. Coastal areas from Monmouth County to Cape May are at the highest risk for significant impacts.
Although uncertainty remains in the storm’s exact track, officials note that a closer or slower-moving system could bring more severe consequences, while a slightly offshore track would likely reduce hazards.
Post-Storm Outlook
By Tuesday, the storm is expected to move offshore, with conditions returning to typical mid-October weather. Temperatures are predicted to moderate to the mid-60s, providing relief after the weekend’s severe weather.
Residents are urged to monitor local weather updates, secure property, and follow evacuation or safety advisories if issued.
