First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker has just issued the following statement on social media, asking if citizens think a new ‘Bethel Citizens’ University’ is a good idea (similar to “Parent University” that the Bethel Public Schools just held).
Topics discussed would include include how our town government works, the basic authorities laid out in our town charter, how land use decisions are made, how assessing and mil rates work, etc. The meeting could include the board chairs and/or department heads participate to discuss and answer questions.

I would like your feedback on an issue that I think is important. Last night I attended Bethel Public School’s Parent University event. The purpose is to provide a variety of classroom experiences with administrators and staff to give parents insights into how their schools operate and the educational experience their children are receiving. As usual, the staff did an outstanding job, and the event was well attended despite the lousy weather.
For some time I have been thinking of something similar, kicking around the idea of conducting a “Bethel Citizens University” to teach people more about how our local government works. Over the last year, whenever I have the opportunity to speak to larger groups of people, I have noticed that many of our residents, in some groups a pretty large majority, came to Bethel from other cities and other states. Often many of these newcomers (even if they’ve been here for a few years) have a very good understanding of what “town meeting” form of government is and how it works. Of these people, the majority grew up in cities with city councils, which is more centralized and does things very differently. I would like to offer a one-night overview of how town meeting government works, and cover not only the basics, but also the areas of authority that are very different than city councils. Topics could include the basic authorities laid out in our town charter, how land use decisions are made, how assessing and mil rates work and so on. We could have the board chairs and/or department heads participate to discuss and answer questions.
