Las Vegas, NV – A Nevada man who pleaded guilty to driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless driving resulting in death received nearly the maximum prison sentence for a crash that killed a 23-year-old U.S. Airman.
Crash Details
Hetsel Campos, 39, was arrested after the April 13, 2024, crash on U.S. Highway 95, where he hit U.S. Airman Natalie Villegas, 23, at a reported speed of 117 mph. Court records show Campos had double the legal blood alcohol limit at the time of the collision.
According to Nevada State Police, Campos was driving a Chevrolet Traverse northbound when he rear-ended Villegas’ Hyundai Elantra, sending both vehicles off the road. Villegas’ car flipped onto its roof in the desert area near the highway. She was pronounced dead at the scene while driving to work at Creech Air Force Base.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
Campos appeared in court after pleading guilty in March to DUI and reckless driving resulting in death as part of a plea agreement. In court, Campos addressed Villegas’ family:
“I should be the one gone, not her. I should be the one that’s not here.”
Villegas’ father spoke directly to Campos, stating:
“While on her way to serve our country, you irresponsibly and selfishly came along and took all that away from my daughter.”
Clark County District Court Judge Tara Clark Newberry emphasized the severity of Campos’ actions:
“My charge and my oath is to uphold justice and to hold people accountable for the choices that they make. And unfortunately, Mr. Campos, you made the worst possible choice you ever could have probably made in your life that night.”
Campos was sentenced to six to 20 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 2031 as per KLAS.
Community and Safety Reminder
The tragic death of Airman Villegas highlights the risks of drunk driving and speeding. Authorities urge drivers to never get behind the wheel while impaired, and to exercise caution on highways to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Conclusion
This case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of reckless and impaired driving, particularly when it results in the loss of life. The sentence reflects the legal system’s commitment to accountability and justice for victims.
