ASHWAUBENON, Wis. – An 18-year-old man from Nekoosa is now facing a first-degree intentional homicide charge following a fatal shooting on Interstate 41 earlier this month, according to Brown County officials.
Crash Leads to Discovery of Shooting Suspect
According to the criminal complaint, Brown County deputies responded to a crash on I-41 southbound near State Highway 172 eastbound on August 15. A report indicated that a man had fled the vehicle involved in the crash while carrying a rifle, heading into a wooded area nearby.
Initial dispatch descriptions estimated the suspect to be between 25 and 35 years old. However, he was later identified as Ji-Gwe-Mko Layton, an 18-year-old from Nekoosa.
Suspect Taken into Custody at the Scene
Deputy Sergeant Pizzala located Layton shortly after the crash. According to the complaint, Layton dropped the rifle into gravel and was covered in blood at the time of contact. He was immediately ordered to the ground and placed in handcuffs.
During questioning, Layton reportedly admitted to shooting the victim, stating:
“He was acting like he was going to rob my safe while I was at work.”
Layton then confirmed he had shot the victim in the head.
Victim’s Cause of Death and Investigation Update
A preliminary medical report listed the victim’s cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds. The identity of the victim has not yet been publicly released by authorities.
Law enforcement has not commented on whether any other individuals were involved or if any charges beyond homicide may be forthcoming.
Upcoming Court Hearing
Ji-Gwe-Mko Layton is scheduled to appear in Brown County Circuit Court at 2:00 p.m. on August 26. He remains in custody pending further legal proceedings as reported by WAGB.
Impact and Legal Ramifications
Under Wisconsin law, first-degree intentional homicide carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Prosecutors will now begin formal proceedings to determine whether Layton will face trial, and if any plea negotiations will take place.
This incident adds to growing concerns surrounding youth gun violence and mental health challenges, especially among teenagers facing interpersonal conflict or perceived threats.
