Myrtle Beach, SC – A New Year’s Eve police chase in Myrtle Beach ended dramatically when a car crashed through a fence in a residential neighborhood, causing property damage but no injuries to residents, authorities said. The incident has raised concerns among neighbors about safety in high-risk areas and the potential for future accidents.
High-Speed Pursuit Ends in Neighborhood
According to the Myrtle Beach Police Department, the chase occurred just after 7:45 p.m. on December 31 off Pine Island Road. Officers said the pursuit began after the driver, Marshal Ward, failed to stop during a routine traffic stop, prompting a high-speed pursuit through the area.
Videos from the scene show the car crashing through the fencing behind two homes, knocking over a substantial portion of the structure.
Charges Filed Against Driver
Marshal Ward was arrested in connection with the incident. Police said he faces multiple charges, including:
- Failure to stop for law enforcement
- Reckless driving
- Operating without a license
- Uninsured vehicle fee violation
- Driving under suspension
Authorities confirmed that all three occupants of the vehicle received medical attention, but no one living in the affected homes was harmed.
Neighbors Call for Increased Safety Measures
Residents who witnessed the aftermath expressed concern about the potential danger posed to pedestrians and children in the neighborhood.
One neighbor said:
“I think the city should definitely implement something, especially on that curve, maybe put up a better fence. Something metal there, to kind of make sure cars are not flying into people’s backyards, because that’s something that could be damaging to people’s lives and people’s homes.”
Another resident, Imelda Collier, added:
“I’m worried because kids are here, there’s people walking in the street.”
Neighbors emphasized that while no one was injured during this incident, it highlighted the risk of high-speed pursuits in residential areas and the need for preventive safety measures.
Police Response and Community Safety
The Myrtle Beach Police Department confirmed the pursuit ended safely, aside from property damage, and praised officers for quickly securing the scene and ensuring residents were not harmed. Authorities also reminded residents that attempts to flee law enforcement are extremely dangerous and can result in criminal charges, as seen in this case.
Officials said the investigation is complete, and charges against the driver have been filed, with court dates expected in the coming weeks.
Authorities continue to urge residents to report traffic safety concerns and to follow updates regarding any potential changes to neighborhood safety infrastructure.
