Today we have another wonderful written piece from Jeanne Claire Probst, in our continuing literary series. We are thrilled to have author/poet/blogger Jeanne Claire Probst join Bethel Advocate as a contributor, sharing her “Thought and Poem” written works with us. Her work covers many topics. She is excited to be fulfilling a life-long dream of writing a novel of which “The Fifteen Houses, a Novel” is her first published work. I think you will enjoy! THOUGHT AND POEM

I don’t sleep well at night, and haven’t for many years. But instead of tossing and turning all night long, I let my imagination entertain me, or at times perhaps bore me until I can fall asleep. Have you done this? Okay, maybe not…I will admit I can be a little weird. Although, I have learned that it really doesn’t matter what people think about the ways I choose to get through my long nights or any trials I may face.
Usually on sleepless nights, my mind will travel back in time and run down all the “you-shouldn’t-have-done-these-things-in-my-life” kind of moments. And then I spend the night weighing on the guilt and whatever feelings that follows them. But tonight, I decided I would plant a garden.
Unlike a real garden of fruits and veggies, this garden contains rows of the different people I have met in my life and what I have learned from them. Not your typical garden of course, as I don’t get any minerals or vitamins from this garden. But I have reaped benefits from the skills I have been taught, from the comfort, time and energy I have been given by one of the rows, that may have helped me to survive my everyday situations and nourished my soul with positive juices that got me to where I am today.
From these rows, like any garden, I can walk about and pick the “fruits” that will make me stronger, braver, bolder, and more energetic. I also look among my rows for “fruits” that will boost my spirits when I am feeling weak or have doubts about my abilities.
There are times too, that I have to do a little weeding in these rows, as negative vibes or errors will creep in around my plant babies and want to kill what they have to offer me. I can’t let these weeds hang around, as it has taken me a lifetime to learn what real value is and where true happiness can be found. I will tell you honestly that I have looked very hard for these over the years and look…they were right in front of my eyes, within my reach all this time…. inside me and in my garden.

MY GARDEN OF NAMES

As I lay here in my bed, in the darkness of the night,
I am throwing around in my mind, all the different people I have met so far in my life.
I find it kind of interesting, how I especially,
Know that I needed the connections I had, with other human beings.
Each person whose name that pops up in my head,
Adds a different row of character to my imaginary flower bed,
I have a row of humor of those who made me laugh at my errors and overcome defeat,
And I seem to relate with these as their strengths continue to encourage me.
Then there are names of those that I have met, that have gifts they shared with me and gave me comfort along the way,
And I fill the rows in my garden with their seeds I plant, because what they have taught me I want to remember every day.
So when I am sleepless during the darkness of my night,
I can go to my garden to pick fruitage from the rows of friends, who have added to the person I have become at different parts of my life.
Sometimes I pick a few of the different personalities from among the garden rows, and place them in a salad bowl,
As a variety seems to spice up one’s life, I have always been told.
So I pick some from the wealth of fruits both young and old,
And from those who knew what they wanted out of life, and made succeeding their goal.
And as the night winds down and the sleep begins to come my way,
I think of those who have been strong as they bravely endured any trials they have faced on their difficult days.
I bask in their positive outlook, and think about how I can imitate that I might be able to use when I awaken to face my new day,
And I allow myself to feed on the attitudes and determinations that got them to where they are today.
Before I close the curtains on my eyes,
I look at my rows of friends and beam with pride.
I count all the blessings that I have received from all the people I have met along life’s way,
And I try to remember what each of them has taught me, that if I apply and put to use, I know that I too am going to be oaky and I will make it through the living part of another day.
