MERIDEN — Today, U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) will host an event at the Meriden Public Library to discuss their legislation, the Promise Neighborhoods Authorization Act of 2015. The bill aims to enhance educational and developmental outcomes of children in America’s low-income communities. Murphy and Blumenthal will speak about the importance of ensuring that all Connecticut children – no matter their zip code – are given the support and resources they need to reach their full potential in a reauthorized Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

The senators’ bill would reauthorize the Promise Neighborhoods program and provide children and families in distressed neighborhoods with access to strong school systems and community supports. The Promise Neighborhoods Act will create five-year grants to support the planning and implementation of evidence-based programs that surround children in education, health, and social support activities from the cradle, to college, and to their career. To date, more than 60 communities across the country – including Meriden in Connecticut – have used the grants provided by this program to systemically challenge the detrimental effects of poverty.
