CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, Calif. – A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday morning following a collision with a semi-truck on the Benicia Bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Crash Occurred During Morning Commute
The crash took place on August 27, just before 8:00 a.m., along the southbound lanes of I-680, near the mid-span of the Benicia Bridge. CHP officers responded immediately to the scene.
According to officials, the motorcyclist—described only as a male—was traveling at a slow speed in the far-left lane. He reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and partially entered an adjacent lane. At that moment, he was struck by the left-rear wheels of a passing semi-truck.
Fatal Outcome and Traffic Disruption
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the incident. The crash prompted the closure of three lanes on I-680, causing major delays during the morning commute. All lanes were reopened by approximately 10:30 a.m.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Ongoing Investigation
The CHP Contra Costa division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as reported. In a statement, officials asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact their Martinez office.
At this time, it remains unclear whether the semi-truck driver stayed at the scene or whether any traffic citations were issued.
Staying Safe on California Highways
Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable travelers on California’s highways. Even at slower speeds, lane changes and sudden movements can lead to tragic outcomes when heavy trucks are involved. The CHP urges all drivers to remain alert and use caution, especially when sharing the road with motorcycles.
