Missouri Son Charged with Bludgeoning Mother to Death Over Inheritance in Ozark Residence

Ozark, MO – A 39-year-old Missouri man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly bludgeoning his mother, Carolyn Alling, 65, to death with a gardening tool, according to Christian County authorities.

Discovery of the Crime

Deputies were called to the Alling residence on Thursday at around 9:30 p.m. for a well-being check after Carolyn’s husband reported she had not responded to calls throughout the day. The home is located about 180 miles southeast of Kansas City.

Upon arrival, officers met with Derrick Alling, Carolyn’s son, who immediately drew suspicion due to his odd behavior and inconsistent answers, according to Sheriff Brad Cole.

When questioned about his mother, Derrick initially remained silent and later admitted he “didn’t think she was alive.” Deputies followed him to the guest house, where they discovered Carolyn’s bloodied and beaten body.

Brutal Details of the Attack

Authorities reported that Carolyn Alling had been repeatedly struck in the head and face with a gardening or scraping tool, causing multiple skull fractures. Prosecutors described the attack as “violent and gruesome.”

The stepfather stated that Derrick, the beneficiary of his mother’s trust, had threatened her repeatedly in the weeks leading up to the murder, demanding access to his inheritance. Court records also indicate that Carolyn had recorded her son acting aggressively in the weeks before her death.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Derrick Alling is charged with:

  • First-degree murder
  • Armed criminal action

He has pleaded not guilty and is currently held without bond at the Christian County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 14.

Remembering Carolyn Alling

Her family described her as passionate and caring, emphasizing the tragic loss of a life cut short in such a violent manner.
