Missed opportunity in Bethel; Vote NO, too high.

Bethel has an incredible opportunity this year to fund important expenditures solely through growth in our Grand List and the “revenue side of the equation”. Over $1.44 million year to year, along with another $1.9 million in bond based items, for over $3.3 million dollars in new spending could be absorbed without raising property taxes. That really means, without raising property taxes!

Sadly, the various boards have failed to do the heavy lifting, balancing and adjusting. The vote on the budget represents a massive $600,000 above and beyond to increase property tax. By exceeding our ability to pay within the grand list, $75 added this year becomes $150 added the next year, and $225 or more the year after that; spending beyond our means being Bethel’s addiction.

$1.44+ million should be enough of a spending increase, and that just above 2% year to year; an increase that would keep our already sky high mill rate flat. It must be enough. Fully 19% of students are eligible for subsidized meals, up significantly from a few years ago. Bethel is not a wealthy town.

Hard decisions, workforce rebalancing and prioritization/triage as in the private sector must be the course of action forced on the Boards of Education and Finance through voting NO, TOO HIGH. This budget shall not pass!

If Bethel Voters insist on living within our means, we will. Solutions will be found, kids will get a great education, and property owners will at least get some relief. Send this budget back for adjusting. Vote No, and tell the town, it’s just too high!

  8. Beano, have you tried growing garlic? Its easiest to grow, plant clove into soil about 4-6 deep & 6-8 apart. I plant in August or early September, It will grow all winter. Harvest late July, early August. They will be ready to dig when the first 3-4 leaves turn brown. They will be nice and white just like the store bought, mine are larger! At least I was learning new things at Uni, now I'm just employed at a boring place, and struggling to find a job in my field. It's a little depressing.
