Hanska, MN — Authorities in southern Minnesota are investigating a double homicide that occurred early Sunday morning in the small town of Hanska, where two people were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home.
According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 4:22 a.m. on the 100 block of Blessum Street W. in a community of roughly 385 residents, located about 20 miles west of Mankato.
Child’s 911 Call Leads to Discovery
Officials said the investigation began when a child called 911, reporting that “his mom’s ex-boyfriend broke into their house and shot his mom.” Responding deputies arrived to find two people — a 32-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man — both dead from gunshot wounds.
“It was the child’s call that led officers to the scene,” the Brown County Sheriff’s Office said. “Two victims were found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.”
Authorities have not yet released the victims’ identities pending family notification.
Suspect Arrested in Iowa
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Randy Thomas Zimmerman, was arrested later that day in Iowa, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies. According to Bring Me The News, Zimmerman was taken into custody around 4:12 p.m. with help from the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.
“Zimmerman was considered armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said in its initial report.
At the time of the manhunt, Zimmerman was reportedly wearing a black or camouflage jacket, black pants, black shoes, and a black baseball-style hat. Authorities also said he was possibly driving a 2013 black Toyota Camry with Minnesota license plate 2GU817.
Investigation Continues
Law enforcement officials have not released additional details about the circumstances of Zimmerman’s arrest or a possible motive in the shootings. Investigators from both Minnesota and Iowa are now working together to determine how the suspect crossed state lines and whether the victims had prior protective orders or police contact.
“The investigation remains active,” the sheriff’s office said, adding that more information will be released as it becomes available.
Authorities said the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is assisting with the forensic investigation. An autopsy is being conducted to confirm the victims’ exact causes of death.
Community in Shock
The quiet town of Hanska has been shaken by the violence. Residents described the tragedy as deeply unsettling in a community where violent crime is extremely rare.
Local officials and crisis counselors are coordinating with the school district to provide support services for the child who made the 911 call and other affected families.
“Our hearts go out to the victims and the child who endured this unimaginable event,” Brown County Sheriff Jason Seidl said.
Public Urged to Stay Informed
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to Zimmerman’s movements or prior interactions with the victims to contact the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
