Mesa, AZ — Police say a 39-year-old woman, identified as Ashley Lutton, has been arrested on multiple charges, including child abuse and drug-related offenses, after allegedly attempting to sell prescription pills to a teenage former patient from a rehabilitation facility.
Arrest Followed Shocking Allegations
According to Mesa Police, the case began on the evening of August 22 when officers received a report that Lutton, who was employed at a juvenile inpatient drug rehabilitation facility, had contacted a 17-year-old boy who was recently discharged.
Investigators said the teen’s mother discovered a series of disturbing text messages exchanged between Lutton and her son. The messages allegedly showed her offering to sell Adderall, arranging a meeting spot, and even requesting fentanyl and OxyContin from the boy.
Police confirmed that shortly after the exchange, Lutton arrived at the teenager’s home but fled when confronted.
Drugs and Firearms Found During Search
Lutton was arrested on August 24 after detectives executed a search warrant. A search of her apartment and vehicle reportedly uncovered drugs packaged for sale along with firearms, according to a police statement shared with FOX 10 Phoenix.
Officials said these findings strengthened the case against her, revealing that her involvement extended far beyond a single exchange.
Eight Felony Charges Filed
Mesa Police reported that Lutton now faces eight felony charges, including:
- Drug sales to minors
- Dangerous drug sales
- Child abuse
- Additional drug-related offenses
Authorities stated that she is being held on a $10,000 bond.
Facility Not Identified
While police confirmed that Lutton was employed at a juvenile inpatient rehabilitation center at the time of the incident, they did not release the name of the facility. The omission has left lingering questions about oversight and safety protocols at treatment centers that care for vulnerable minors.
Community Concerns
The arrest has sparked concerns within the Mesa community about the safety of youth in rehabilitation programs. Parents and advocates are calling for stronger safeguards to ensure employees entrusted with children’s care are vetted properly and held accountable.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as they review evidence and consider whether additional charges may apply.
