Mesa Father Charged with First-Degree Murder after Infant Daughter Dies from ‘Catastrophic Injuries’

Mesa, AZ – A 22-year-old father is behind bars on a $1 million bond after allegedly admitting to fatally assaulting his infant daughter because she was “crying too much.” The case has sent shockwaves through the Mesa community and marks the second infant-related homicide reported in the city in recent weeks.

Baby Found Unresponsive in Mesa Apartment

According to Mesa Police, officers responded to an apartment near University Drive and Gilbert Road on the morning of July 11, after receiving reports of a baby not breathing. Upon arrival, first responders found the infant girl unresponsive and immediately transported her to a hospital in critical condition.

Initial explanations given by the baby’s parents — including claims that she had fallen off the bed or choked on a bottle — were inconsistent and raised red flags for investigators.

Injuries ‘Catastrophic’: Skull Fractures, Brain Bleeding, Broken Bones

According to AZFamily, Medical staff documented horrific injuries, including:

  • A fractured skull
  • Brain bleeding
  • Bruising around the eyes
  • A broken leg and rib fractures

She remained hospitalized for 15 days, succumbing to her injuries on July 26. An autopsy later confirmed that her injuries were consistent with “slamming, crushing, or stomping,” with many labeled “catastrophic” in nature.

Father Admits to Hitting Infant in the Head

During a second interview on Wednesday, the father, Jonathan Enriquez, reportedly confessed to striking the baby on the left side of her head while she lay in her bassinette because she was “crying too much.” He also admitted to swaddling her tightly in an effort to stop her from crying.

Investigators revealed that Enriquez had sent a message to the child’s mother, who was at work at the time, stating that he “messed up” and needed her to return home immediately.

Enriquez was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse, according to court records.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities say Enriquez expressed “deep remorse” and admitted to being “ashamed” of his actions. While police have not confirmed whether the child’s mother will also face charges, the investigation remains ongoing.

This is the second case of infant homicide in Mesa in recent weeks. In July, a 19-year-old man was also charged with murder and child abuse following the death of his six-week-old son.

Preventing Infant Abuse: A Community Responsibility

Tragic incidents like these underline the need for better parental support, mental health resources, and community awareness regarding infant care and stress management.

If you or someone you know is struggling with caring for a child, seek help immediately. Resources such as parenting hotlines, counseling services, and crisis nurseries are available and can prevent situations from escalating.
