Mass Shooting in Orlando Nightclub, 50 Killed, 53 Injured, Deadliest US Shooting in History
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on June 12, 2016 a shooting took place killing 50 people at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando Florida. It is considered the deadliest mass shooting in U. S. history.
The shooter, using an AR-15 assault rifle and a handgun, has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, of Fort Pierce, FL, about 120 miles southeast of Orlando, two law enforcement officials told CNN.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said 53 more people were injured, according to a report by CNN. “It appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him.” It was originally thought that an explosive device was on the shooter but that was found to be untrue.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer declared a state of emergency for the city. He requested the governor do the same for the state.
This is being investigated as a domestic act of terror.
The FBI is involved and are exploring all possibilities, including this being a hate crime, and they “have suggestions the individual has leanings towards (Islamic terrorism), but right now we can’t say definitely,” said Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Orlando bureau.
NBC reports that in a 911 call during the shootings the gunman pledged allegiance to the head of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. This puts a whole new slant on the situation.
NBC also reports that the gunman’s exwife said he was prone to outbursts and had beat her, and that she thought he was unstable and so she divorced him.
Mina said an officer working in the club was first to respond to the situation, he engaged in a shootout with the gunman, then the gunman ran into the club and it turned into a hostage situation that lasted until approximately 5:00a.m.. More police rushed to the scene as they received calls from people inside the club. Police broke down a door with an armored vehicle, helping 30 individuals flee to safety. Police were in touch with the shooter at one point but all negotiations failed. A gunfight took place when a SWAT team stormed the shooter. The gunman was shot and killed.
An extensive investigation is ongoing due to the number of people involved.
