Maryland State Police Helicopter Rescues Hiker After 25-Foot Fall in Charles County

Charles County, MD — A hiker was successfully rescued by the Maryland State Police (MSP) Aviation Command after a 25-foot fall from a tree over a steep embankment in a remote area of Charles County this past weekend.

Hiker Requires Aerial Evacuation

Authorities report that the incident occurred near Port Tobacco around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, when first responders from Charles County Fire and Rescue, the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, and the Charles County Department of Emergency Services (DES) reached the injured hiker.

Due to the steep and remote location, crews determined that an aerial evacuation was necessary to transport the individual safely to a medical facility. Trooper 7 of the MSP Aviation Command was dispatched with the Augusta Westland-139 helicopter to assist in the rescue operation.

Helicopter Rescue Operation

Pilots positioned the helicopter approximately 115 feet above the ground, hovering over the rescue site where responders had secured the hiker. A rescue technician and an MSP trooper were lowered to the injured individual, who was then placed into a specialized rescue device and lifted into the aircraft.

During the flight to the regional trauma center, the trooper provided medical care to stabilize the hiker, ensuring continuous attention until arrival.

“This successful rescue demonstrates the importance of collaboration between multiple public safety agencies,” officials said.

Collaboration Key to Success

MSP credited the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, Charles County DES, and other local public safety partners for their role in the operation. The coordinated response allowed responders to reach a remote, hard-to-access area, secure the hiker, and safely transport them to the hospital for urgent care.

  • Air Evacuation: Helicopter lifted patient 115 feet above the terrain.
  • Medical Attention: Trooper provided care during flight to trauma center.

Officials stressed the importance of immediate action and inter-agency coordination in remote rescues. The combined effort of aerial support and ground personnel was critical in preventing further injury or delay in care.

Safety Reminders for Hikers

Authorities reminded hikers to always:

  • Carry communication devices for emergencies.
  • Stay aware of terrain hazards such as steep embankments and trees.
  • Notify others of planned routes and estimated return times.

The hiker’s condition has not been publicly disclosed, but MSP confirmed the individual was transported safely thanks to the rapid response and teamwork of all involved agencies.
