Maryland Braces for Snow Friday; Cold Weather to Continue Through the Weekend

Baltimore, MD — Maryland residents should prepare for light snow on Friday, as temperatures remain colder than usual for this time of year. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has declared Friday a First Alert Weather Day from late morning through early evening, warning that untreated surfaces could become slippery.

A storm system approaching from the south and west is expected to bring snow showers and steady light snow across central and eastern Maryland. Snow could begin as early as Friday morning, continuing through the afternoon before tapering off in the evening.

Cold and Frosty Conditions Ahead

Through Thursday, Maryland will experience cold and mostly clear weather, with overnight lows in the upper 20s to lower 30s in the metro area, colder farther from the city. Frost is expected in some areas early Thursday morning.

Temperatures will rise briefly into the lower 40s during the day as clouds increase and gusty winds develop, before another blast of cold air drops temperatures below freezing Thursday evening. Overnight lows Thursday night are expected in the upper teens to lower 20s, with a light breeze making it feel even colder.

Snow Accumulation and Safety Concerns Friday

Snowfall totals along and east of I-95, including Baltimore City, could range from a coating to 2 inches, with the highest chance of 2 inches south of Route 50. Areas north and west along I-95 will likely see lighter snow, though isolated snow cannot be ruled out.

Important safety note: Untreated surfaces, especially sidewalks, bridges, and overpasses, may be slippery through Saturday morning until temperatures rise above freezing. Treated roads should remain wet but manageable.

Weekend Weather: Chilly but Mostly Dry

Maryland will remain cold and mostly dry through the weekend. Saturday will feature limited sunshine with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s and overnight lows below freezing.

For sports fans, the Ravens game on Sunday looks mostly dry with a mix of sun and clouds, though forecasts suggest slightly more unsettled weather late Sunday into early next week.

Arctic Cold Early Next Week

A fresh surge of unseasonably cold air is expected early next week. Monday will be mostly dry with highs in the mid-30s. There is a possibility of a fast-moving band of rain or snow through the mid-Atlantic on Monday or Tuesday. Local precipitation forecasts will be fine-tuned over the next few days.
