Marinette Police Shoot and Kill Suspect After Chase and Crash

Marinette, WI — On Friday, August 29, a police chase related to a Dane County death investigation led to a suspect being shot and killed by Marinette police officers.

The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave as per agency policy.

Chase and Shooting Details

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), a Marinette police officer first spotted a vehicle linked to the death investigation around 9:10 a.m. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect fled, sparking a high-speed chase.

The pursuit continued southbound on I-41 until the suspect crashed the vehicle near Schact Road. Additional law enforcement officers from Marinette, Marinette County, and Peshtigo quickly arrived at the scene.

According to the DOJ, after the crash, the driver exited the vehicle and approached officers. Despite a taser deployment by a Marinette County deputy, it was ineffective. The situation escalated when two Marinette police officers shot the suspect, who later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital.

“A sharp-edged weapon was found at the scene,” the DOJ reported.

Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

Investigation and Police Protocol

As is standard procedure, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. One of the officers was equipped with a body-worn camera, and both officers’ squad cameras were activated during the encounter.

The Wisconsin DOJ Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is leading the investigation, with support from the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Wisconsin Statewide Intelligence Center.

The investigation will conclude with a report submitted to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
