Raleigh, NC – A North Carolina man is facing felony charges after allegedly using his HIV-positive blood as a weapon against hospital staff at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
According to police, 25-year-old Kameron Gilchrist is accused of removing an IV from his arm and spraying his blood into the eyes of two healthcare workers who were treating him for diabetic complications.

An arrest warrant obtained by authorities alleges that Gilchrist intentionally aimed his blood at the victims’ faces. The report states, “He aimed his HIV positive blood at the victims’ eyes.”
The two victims — a man and a woman employed at UNC Rex Hospital — were allegedly attacked while providing care to Gilchrist in March 2024. Police say both healthcare workers suffered eye irritation and HIV exposure, though it remains unclear whether either contracted the virus.
Violent Outburst During Diabetic Treatment
Investigators say Gilchrist was receiving treatment for diabetes when he suddenly became violent. Police allege he pulled out his IV line and sprayed blood toward the two medical professionals, hitting them directly in the eyes.
Gilchrist was arrested in September but was not immediately taken into custody at the time of the incident because he was undergoing medical and psychiatric care, according to WRAL.
Hospital Responds to Growing Safety Concerns
Officials at UNC Rex Hospital have condemned the attack, saying violence against healthcare personnel has been rising. While the hospital declined to discuss the specifics of Gilchrist’s case due to the ongoing investigation, a spokesperson emphasized that employee safety remains a top priority.
The hospital added that it is working closely with law enforcement and security teams to strengthen protection for medical workers following the assault.

Kameron Gilchrist faces felony charges for assaulting emergency personnel and remains in custody on a $25,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 8, 2025, according to police.
