Man Punched Teacher Over Subway Seat in New York City, NYPD looking for Suspect

New York City, NY – A 27-year-old Manhattan teacher was concussed and left terrified after being punched in the face by a fellow subway rider over a seat dispute on a Bronx-bound 5 train, authorities and the victim said. The NYPD is actively searching for the unidentified suspect, who reportedly acted violently simply because the educator sat nearby.

Subway Assault Over Seat Dispute

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Wednesday aboard a southbound 5 train. The teacher, who works in Manhattan but hails from the Bronx, told police and media she simply wanted to sit down during her morning commute. She noticed that a man nearby “was taking up enough space for two people,” prompting her to sit next to him when another commuter offered room.

According to the victim, the man immediately verbally accosted her, accusing her of trying to squeeze into the space. “I wasn’t even moving,” the teacher said, emphasizing that she had been respectful of his space.

Assault Turns Physical

The man allegedly shoved the educator onto another passenger and then punched her in the face, repeatedly threatening to break her jaw. “He kept saying, ‘You think you’re a woman and I can’t hit you? I will break your jaw,’” the victim recalled.

The teacher said her adrenaline kicked in, prompting her to fight back in self-defense. The punch left her close to blacking out, resulting in a concussion confirmed after a trip to the hospital.

Commuters Intervene

During the confrontation, a fellow rider stepped in to pull the teacher away from the aggressor, preventing further injury. The teacher disembarked at East 86 Street and Lexington Avenue, while the suspect remained on the train, according to NYPD reports.

The victim described her physical and emotional trauma following the attack, saying she had to call her principal and break down in tears once the shock of the incident wore off. She now relies on Uber for commuting, fearing a repeat encounter on the subway.

Suspect Still At Large

The NYPD released a description and image of the suspect, describing him as a bearded man wearing a black jacket, black pants, black boots, and a zipped-up hooded sweatshirt. Detectives have remained in constant contact with the victim as the investigation continues.

NYPD Continues Investigation

Authorities urge anyone with information or footage of the suspect to contact the NYPD. The victim continues to receive support from law enforcement while recovering from her injuries.
