Olathe, Kansas — A shocking act of violence unfolded at a Whole Foods parking lot in Olathe, Kansas, when a 50-year-old man allegedly attacked an elderly shopper with a hammer. Christopher Brewer, 50, was arrested on Sunday and charged with aggravated battery for allegedly striking an 85-year-old woman in the head. Authorities say the victim sustained serious injuries and required emergency surgery.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. as the woman was loading groceries into her vehicle. According to witnesses, Brewer approached her and began striking her with a hammer, prompting screams and chaos in the busy parking lot.
Eyewitness Accounts Highlight the Attack
A nearby shopper reportedly saw the horrifying scene and immediately intervened, watching Brewer hit the elderly woman. According to a criminal complaint obtained by WDAF, Brewer allegedly made statements such as “I’m a person too” and “You don’t know what you’re doing” during the altercation, which left bystanders stunned.
Officers arrived at the scene within minutes and found Brewer still present while first responders tended to the victim. The woman had suffered lacerations to her skull and nose and was placed on the ground for immediate medical care.
Victim’s Condition and Surgery
The 85-year-old woman, whose name has not been publicly released, was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent surgery to address facial fractures. According to the reports, she was placed in intensive care, though updates on her recovery have not been released.
Neighbors of the victim described her as a regular shopper at the Olathe Whole Foods. Sherill Benson, a nearby resident, told reporters, “The day she had been here, she said she had been at the store and was going to go home and have a salad from there.” The attack left the community shaken and questioning public safety in everyday spaces.

That’s what I would like to say, and at some point in time could find out what happened to him because I need to talk about that.”
Brewer was subsequently booked into the Johnson County Jail, with his bond set at $35,000 after his first court appearance on Monday. He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Dec. 11.
