Stamford, CT — Police in Stamford have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection to a tragic hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy riding a mini-bike earlier this year. Authorities say the suspect attempted to evade responsibility, but ongoing investigation efforts finally led to his arrest this week.
Deadly Collision on Courtland Avenue
On the night of August 2, around 8:45 p.m., the young victim was riding a mini-bike with a family member on Courtland Avenue in Stamford. Both had pulled over toward the shoulder of the road when an unidentified vehicle crashed into the mini-bike at high speed, throwing the child several feet from the roadway.
According to officials, the boy landed in a yard of a nearby residence. Two neighbors who heard the crash rushed outside and immediately administered CPR while waiting for first responders to arrive. The child was transported to Stamford Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police say the driver involved in the collision fled the scene, turning the incident into a major hit-and-run investigation.
Suspect Identified and Arrested
Following months of investigative work, police identified the suspected driver as Juan Carlos Umana-Umana, 41, of Stamford, Connecticut. Detectives allege his vehicle was responsible for striking the mini-bike and causing the fatal crash.
Authorities announced that Umana-Umana turned himself in on Monday, cooperating with officers once the arrest warrant was issued, as per NBC.

He is currently being held on a $200,000 bond. Court records list his first appearance date as November 10.
