Man Arrested after Armed Standoff and Home Invasion in Beaufort County

Pantego, NC – A man is in custody after a violent series of events that began with a home invasion and assault and ended in a tense standoff with law enforcement on Sunday evening.

Home Invasion and Assault

40-year-old Casey Lathem Bell reportedly broke into a home on C Canal Road, where he assaulted both a man and a woman inside. After the attack, Bell allegedly stole the residents’ vehicle and fled the scene. Deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched a search for the suspect, ultimately locating him on Railroad Bed Road.

Armed Confrontation with Deputies

As officers approached Bell’s location, he walked into the roadway and pointed a long-barreled rifle at the officers, before firing in their direction. The shots prompted an immediate tactical response. The Sheriff’s Response Team and Drone Unit were deployed to safely contain the situation.

Tactical Operation and Drone Deployment

To reduce risk to officers, the team used a drone to gain visual access inside the structure where Bell had taken cover. Authorities breached the home’s exterior and flew the drone inside, where contact was established with the suspect.

As per WNCT, the drone allowed deputies to negotiate without direct confrontation, minimizing potential harm.

Surrender and Arrest

At approximately 6:15 p.m., after a period of communication, Bell exited the residence and surrendered peacefully to authorities. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Investigation and Charges

Bell is expected to face multiple felony charges, including breaking and entering, assault, vehicle theft, and attempted murder of law enforcement officers. Officials have not yet disclosed the identities or medical status of the assault victims.

Community Safety and Officer Readiness

This incident underscores the growing role of technology like drones in modern policing, allowing officers to manage dangerous situations while minimizing risk to human life. The Sheriff’s Office praised the coordinated response of all involved units and reiterated their commitment to public safety.
