West Palm Beach, Fla. – A trail bicyclist visiting from out of town was found and rescued Saturday after losing his way inside the DuPuis Management Area, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Bicyclist Went Off Trail and Became Disoriented
Authorities said the cyclist encountered difficult terrain and veered off the marked trail. After becoming disoriented and unable to navigate back, he contacted deputies for assistance.
GPS Coordinates Helped Pinpoint Location
Dispatchers were able to obtain precise GPS coordinates from the bicyclist’s cell phone and relay them to responding units. The sheriff’s Aviation Unit then deployed a helicopter, which located the cyclist from the air and guided Agricultural Unit and Road Patrol deputies on the ground to his position.
Helicopter Footage Shows Rescue Operation
Video released by the sheriff’s office shows the aerial search and the moment crews identified the lost cyclist. Officials credited the cell phone GPS signal as a critical factor in the quick response and successful outcome.
Area Known for Wildlife and Rugged Conditions
The DuPuis Management Area is home to a range of wildlife, including alligators, snakes, bears, and wild hogs. Deputies said the coordinated effort led to a safe and seamless recovery, and the bicyclist was brought out of the preserve without injury.
What Happens Next
Officials did not release the bicyclist’s name and said no medical treatment was required. The sheriff’s office reminded visitors to remain on marked trails, carry navigation tools, and be aware of changing terrain and wildlife when exploring large preserves.
