A lock down drill with K-9 units took place yesterday, April 8, 2015, at Bethel High School, “for the purpose of detecting the presence of illegal substances or contraband, including alcohol and/or drugs” and “to protect the health and safety of students, employees or property.”
Law enforcement agencies or other qualified agencies or individuals were invited to search school property with specially trained dogs. The K-9 units focused primarily on student lockers, bathrooms, and parking lots. The dogs did not go into classrooms and they did not approach individual students.

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are writing this letter to inform you that on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at approximately 9 a.m. Bethel High School participated in a lock down drill. During this drill, we invited K-9 units from the Bethel Police Department and the surrounding towns to walk our hallways and our parking lot. Bethel Board of Education Policy #5145.12b states, “When necessary to protect the health and safety of students, employees or property, and for the purpose of detecting the presence of illegal substances or contraband, including alcohol and/or drugs, the Board shall permit the administration to invite law enforcement agencies or other qualified agencies or individuals to search school property with specially trained dogs.” The K-9 units focused primarily on student lockers, bathrooms, and parking lots. The dogs did not go into classrooms and they did not approach individual students. Like other area schools, Bethel High School employed the use of the specially trained K-9 units to uphold our commitment to a safe and drug- free school.
