Letter to the Editor from Fran Pulle: “Will Duff, the UNpolitician”
Meet my friend Will Duff, the UNpolitician. Like the “uncola” (7UP) of years past,
Duff IS different and refreshingly so. Seemingly from a gentler time and place Duff stands apart from today’s current crop of sweet-talking vote seekers. Spend a few minutes with Will and you can’t help but realize how unfailingly optimistic,
unnervingly brave and unflaggingly generous this young man is.
Will’s story began forty-seven years ago in Bayshore, Long Island. The youngest
of five children born to Sylvia and Michael Duff, William I. Duff was diagnosed
early on with cystic fibrosis. ( A sister succumbed to the disease in childhood.)
“It was something I had to live with,” Will said, “but it grounded me, I dealt with it.”
Dealt with it…One can imagine how dealing with–at the time–a fatal disease
could propel that person into a maturity well beyond his years. And be etched into the steely yet sensitive countenance that defines Will.
Will was luckier (he’s Irish, after all) than most, however. Advances in medicine resulted in Will receiving a lung transplant in 2009. “I worked out every day–three times in fact–so that I would be very fit when I had the operation,” Will added.
This strategy proved to be successful and Will went on to marry, start a business,
travel and further involve himself in Bethel politics. “I came very close to death,” he confided. “It made me treasure everything. It made me who I am today.”
Who IS Will today? Many of you know Will from Mail Services in Bethel’s Dolan
Plaza. Many of you recall Will serving on the town’s Board of Selectmen. He–along with Cliff Hurgin and Phil Gallagher–co-authored the Code of Ethics and created its respective oversight board. How fitting, I thought, that Will participated in this… “Getting the ethics code passed is the thing I’m most proud of,” admitted Will.
Will resides in Bethel. He moved here at the age of three and calls home the
same Dutch Gambrel he grew up in. Educated in local schools–mostly Catholic–
Will is one course shy of receiving his degree from Sacred Heart University. “Eventually I hope to get my Master’s degree. I have lots of plans for the
future. I love flying, going places!”
Will, the UNpolitician, is going places. But he needs your support. He’s asking
for your vote. “Why do you want to be First Selectman?” I asked.
“I love Bethel,” he replied. I want to see us move in a different direction.”
It is not my aim here to recite Will’s philosophy of governance (Republican) or
detail his plans–should he be elected–to lower taxes, curb waste, etc. There is no need to mention leadership positions he held in the past or the one he occupies today–School Board. Most of us are aware of Will’s service to the town, his town, our town.
What folks may not appreciate is how passionate a fellow Will is. His calm, cool, classy demeanor belies a steadfast will and a dogged determination that serves him well.
“Will.” That’s a great name your parents gave you!” I said. “Yes, it is,” he smiled.

Indian actor who appeared in the popular commercial–“Mahvelous”.
